The Four seasons of Cyprus

Plentiful sunshine all year round is one of the benefits Cyprus receives by being a Mediterranean island.  It is rare that Cyprus experiences extremes of temperatures, which means it has something to offer during every month of the year, from swimming (as late as November) or taking pleasure in cultural sites and festivals (throughout the year). Seasonal fluctuations may not be radical, however, they do differ.

Summer:
Summer lasts from mid-May to mid-October.  This season offers high temperatures, cloudless skies and cooling breezes from the sea. It is ideal for swimming, sunbathing and a vast range of water sports including sailing to scuba diving. It is recommended, at this time of year, to explore archaeological sites early in the morning or later in the afternoon, in order to avoid the hottest part of the day. Even during the hottest time when it is approximately 32 degrees at the beach and warmer in land, the Troodos enjoys more refreshing temperatures, ideal for hiking and relaxing.

September and October remain sunny and the water warm enough to enjoy swimming.

Fall Forecast:

At the end of October the evening temperatures begin to get cooler.  Leaves start to change colour and the vineyards turn to gold and crimson, set against a clear blue sky.  Even November can seem like summer in Cyprus, as it is still possible to take part in swimming and inland excursions such as wine tasting.  During this season the annual Kypria festival takes place with local and international music being played and dramatic performances.

Winter:
The Mediterranean winter is experienced during the months of December and January where there is a high chance of rain, however still on average six hours of sunshine per day. At this time of year many smaller Mediterranean destinations close down, however, Cyprus is not one of them.  The island of Cyprus possesses a number of important heritage sites and museums and is a major business centre, keeping it busy even during the winter months. The cultural calendar is also active during this season with new and exciting things being added all the time. Come early February rain falls on occasion and snow can be found in the Troodos which is ideal for skiing.

Spring:
January in Cyprus sees the first blooms of orchids and come February the countryside is a blaze with colour in the form of fresh green meadows and fruit trees in bloom.  Early spring is a superb time to visit Cyprus as the daytime temperatures are pleasant and the ancient ruins are framed by beautiful wild flowers and wildlife.

April and May see in the peak of the spring season.  This is the best time for nature lovers, hiking and off-road exploring in the Akamas National Park.  In total Cyprus possesses approximately 1,950 different species of flowering plants, 140 of which are indigenous.
