Aphrodite
Aphrodite is the goddess of love and is probably the most well known goddesses from Cyprus.
It is claimed that Aphrodite was born from the waves of the Paphos Sea. Aphrodite is the essence of female seductive beauty and the object of male desire.
Zeus, Aphrodite's father was afraid that the gods would fight over her hand in marriage so he married her off to the smith god Hephaestus. He made her a girdle of finely wrought gold and wove magic into the filigree work. That was not very wise of him, for when she wore her magic girdle no one could resist her, and she was all too irresistible already. She loved gaiety and glamour and was not at all pleased at being the wife of the hard-working Hephaestus.
It is clamed that Aphrodite had an affair with Ares, the god of war. Her passion was great and she was unable to neglect the fact that she was the most beautiful god oozing desire towards men and jealousy towards woman.
Aphrodite became a potent goddess in Cyprus, and her temple in Paphos was famous throughout the Mediterranean basin at least as far back as Homeric times, and attracted pilgrims up until the 4th century AD.
One can visit the waters of which the goddess was born as well as the area in which she bathed. It has been clamed that the fountain has magical powers and maintains youth. Visitors usually wash their face from this water in hope to reduce aging and some even believe that there appearances will become younger.
The best way to see whether this is a theory or fact is to try. Different sources have clamed different things.
