As visitors travel around the island they will be overwhelmed by the spirit and hospitality of its people. Cypriots are renowned for being very accommodating, and guests will be instantly accepted and given a taste of the local culture and way of life.

Population (de jure): 818.200 (End 2003)
79,1%: Greek Cypriots (646.900)
10,7%: Turkish Cypriots (87.800)
10,2%: Foreign residents (83.500)
Prior to the Turkish invasion of 1974 the two communities lived in approximately the same proportions and togehter (4 Greek Cypriots to 1 Turkish Cypriot) in all six administrative districts found withing the island. Since the invasion, approximately 57,000 Turkish Cypriots emigrated. As a result, in the present day they only constitute 10.7% of the population, compared to 18% before July 1974.
