Troodos Forest has been declared a Nature Reserve. Cavo Greko and Potamos tou Liopetriou were also declared National Forest Parks. The Athalassa National Forest Park is situated near Lefkosia and covers an area of 840 ha. One Forest Nature Reserve has already been established at Tripilos, Mavroi Kremmoi, which includes the Cedar Valley.
Akamas peninsula, the northwesternmost tip of Cyprus, is to become a National Park to protect one of the most important natural habitats for several species of fauna and flora unique in the Mediterranean. In the area of Akamas, Lara-Toxeftra is a Marine Reserve.
Areas under study for ecological conservation are the Larnaka Salt Lake, the Platys Valley and Akrotiri Salt Lake and Fassouri Marsh in Lemesos district.
